Jennifer Webster, M.N., R.N., AOCN Contributes Article About Cancer Nursing Care

Georgia Cancer Specialists (GCS) physicians Drs. Nishan Fernando, Rodolfo Bordoni, and Mansoor Saleh, and nurse Jennifer Webster, M.N., R.N., AOCN, recently contributed articles to the Spring 2010 issue of Atlanta Medicine magazine, the journal of the Medical Association of Atlanta. This issue of the magazine was specially focused to highlight important modern oncology issues.

GCS is the largest private medical oncology/hematology practice in the Southeast and a leader in advanced cancer treatment and research.

“It is vital for Atlanta’s medical care providers to be informed about current and developing cancer issues,” said Dr. Bruce Feinberg, president and CEO of GCS. “Our physicians and nurses appreciate the opportunity to increase awareness among other medical professionals, because that ultimately results in enhanced care options for patients.”

Dr. Saleh, Director of Clinical Research at GCS, served as guest editor of the issue.

Dr. Fernando’s article, “Novel Therapies in the Treatment of Colon Cancer,” examined new developments in the treatment of colon cancer, which is 90% preventable but kills 50,000 Americans each year.

Dr. Bordoni’s article, “Current Concepts in the Treatment of Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer,” gave an overview of the pathogenesis, screening, diagnosis, and management techniques of lung cancer — the leading cause of cancer death in the United States.

Webster’s article, “Nursing Care of the Patient With Cancer in the Primary Care Setting,” explored various oncology patient-care issues that primary care physicians and nurses should be aware of, including bone marrow depression, GI toxicities, skin rashes, fatigue, peripheral neuropathies, cognitive changes, sexuality issues, and survivorship issues.
