Why Did GCS Affiliate with Northside Hospital?

Wednesday, January 16th, 2013

Georgia Cancer SpecialistsFor nearly twenty years, Georgia Cancer Specialists (GCS) has been the “cancer answer”, offering state-of-the-art care, compassion, and quality in local communities. GCS has a long history of growth and commitment to the communities we serve. Over our 18 year history as GCS, we have offered innovative services such as interventional radiology, phase I and clinical research, surgical gynecologic oncology, radiation oncology, imaging, nutrition and wellness services, integrated IT platforms, palliative and hospice care, and hematopathology services, to name a few. Our physicians and staff are recognized nationally and internationally for their clinical excellence, as well as through published research, speakers bureaus and advisory boards, authorship, and other awards. Our strong sense of community extends to our investments in local charitable organizations and events, and our physicians’ active participation with the local hospital and medical communities in which they live and serve.

It should come as no surprise then, that as health care in the United States continues to change, and as cancer remains a significant health care threat, GCS’s leadership and physicians continue to strive to innovate. Our mission is firmly anchored in providing excellent care to our patients. One of the main reasons GCS has partnered with Northside Hospital is to provide additional services to support that mission. This arrangement will give patients access to more services and resources in the near future, such as expanded clinical trials, nurse navigators, and better access for covering care for those who are underinsured or uninsured.

Northside Hospital, a Georgia not-for-profit company, offers quality medical care through a variety of services and programs aimed at improving health and health care access. The Northside Hospital Cancer Institute is the only comprehensive community cancer center in Georgia designated by the National Cancer Institute to participate in the NCI Community Cancer Centers Program (NCCCP). The NCCCP hospitals are studying ways to:

  • Reduce cancer healthcare disparities
  • Increase patient participation in clinical trials
  • Improve quality of cancer care
  • Enhance cancer survivorship and palliative care services
  • Expand use of electronic health records and connect to cancer research data networks
  • Promote collection of high-quality biospecimens to support genomically-informed research (also known as personalized medicine)

By affiliating with the Northside Hospital Cancer Institute, GCS will continue to lead in the development of an integrated, multidisciplinary cancer care network that provides the highest-quality cancer care, research, and supportive services to our patients and their families.

This partnership has set a new national standard by creating a model of best practices, increasing access to the evolving science of personalized medicine through clinical research trials, and by promoting general health, prevention, and survivorship opportunities for our patients.

Each day the physicians and staff at GCS come to work for one reason: our patients and their families. And we will continue to be committed first and foremost to those we serve.
