Georgia Cancer SpecialistsGeorgia Cancer Specialists (GCS)—a Top 10 private cancer practice in the U.S.—was the platinum sponsor for the Golf Fore the Girls tournament, which raises money and support toward the fight against breast cancer. The event, held September 28 at The Georgia Club in Statham, Ga., raised funds for the Athens Regional Breast Health Center and the Loran Smith Center for Cancer Support.

More than 35 percent of GCS patients are being treated for breast cancer, making it the most prevalent type of cancer GCS physicians encounter.

Karen Baker, a nurse practitioner at the GCS-Lake Oconee office, participated as a golfer, and Drs. Richard Loyd and Nirav Dhruva, along with RN and GCS-Athens clinic manager Kim Weaver, were in attendance to represent GCS.

“With breast cancer awareness month upon us, there’s no better time for heightened awareness of breast cancer prevention as well as financial support of the research to fight and treat it,” said Dr. Loyd. “I’m pleased GCS was able to sponsor such a worthwhile cause.”

The event celebrated its fourth anniversary. This year, The Georgia Club Ladies Golf Association spearheaded the event, and 100 golfers participated.

“GCS is a big reason we’re winning the battle against breast cancer,” said Felicia Valdes, chair of Golf Fore the Girls. “GCS came on board with enthusiasm and participation, which gave our tournament instant credibility and confidence to ask others to get involved. The recognition GCS has given our tournament by being a major sponsor will set the tone for years to come for continued success.”

GCS is more equipped than ever to offer comprehensive cancer care to the Classic City. With the recent additions of Dr. Dhruva and Dr. Sherine Thomas, as well as a new office location to be completed in early 2011, GCS-Athens is full of growth and energy.

“As a UGA grad, I’m so happy to be back in the Athens area and able to be a part of the strong GCS community,” said Dr. Dhruva. “Events like this golf tournament are a great way for GCS to offer local support as well as update the area on the exciting things happening at our office.”
