Dr. Whaley, former Team Internist for the Atlanta Thrashers, notes that it is important to take precautionary measures before sports practice. “People hardly ever hydrate properly before exercise.” He said that it is important to start hydrating at least thirty minutes beforehand.

Dr. Whaley, an athlete who has competed in over twenty marathons, warns against negative stereotyping of those who take the necessary precautions when performing in the heat. “We need to discourage the ‘macho’ idea that you’re not ‘tough enough’ if you stop during practice to have a drink of water,” he said.
