Dr. Bruce Feinberg Interviewed on Fox 5 About New Mammogram Guidelines

Tuesday, November 17, 2009

Dr. Bruce Feinberg, president and CEO of Georgia Cancer Specialists (GCS), was interviewed by Denise Dillon on Fox 5’s 10 p.m. broadcast Monday, November 16, in a story about newly released breast cancer screening guidelines.

The recommendations from the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force advise women to begin getting mammograms at age 50 instead of 40, and to have them every other year instead of annually. It also discourages physicians from teaching women to do breast self-exams.

The government task force of doctors and scientists concluded that getting screened for breast cancer as early as 40 along with the previously recommended frequency (annually) leads to too many false alarms and unnecessary biopsies without substantially improving women's odds of survival.

Dr. Feinberg was introduced as the president of GCS and the author of Breast Cancer Answers. He was interviewed for his opinion on the task force’s recommendations.

“If the notion is that you’re going to find more false positives than true positives,” said Dr. Feinberg, “ then let’s educate women more about what a true positive is, rather than saying ‘don’t do it at all.’”

Dr. Feinberg was interviewed for approximately one minute. Watch the interview here:
