This is Women’s Health Week, when women are encouraged to take simple steps for a longer, healthier life.
One of the great cultural achievements of our time has been the breast cancer awareness movement that has flourished during the last 25 years. Triumphantly, American women have redefined breast cancer as a subject we can talk about at the dinner table.
Thanks to increased early detection and improved treatments, breast cancer survivors surround us in record numbers.
This is great news, and should be celebrated.
However, some have overlooked a disease that claims 30,000 more American women than breast cancer every year.
That disease is lung cancer. 70,000 women—most of them smokers—will succumb to it in 2007.
So, during Women’s Health Week as we push for greater awareness in the fight against breast cancer, let’s not forget that cigarettes are an even greater killer.
This is Dr. Bruce Feinberg. Be well.
