Controlling Your Cancer Risk

The American Cancer Society released a startling report last month indicating that more than 1/3 of Americans believe they have little or no control over their cancer risk.

These perceptions are absolutely unfounded. Your lifestyle directly affects your risk of developing cancer. You do have power against the disease.

The number one way to avoid cancer is by not smoking. Still, 45 million of us increase our risk of lung cancer and heart disease—the US’s two biggest killers—by smoking.

When you add poor diet and lack of exercise to the mix, more than 150,000 avoidable cancer deaths in our country every year. That’s enough people to fill the Peachtree Road Race three times over.

Remember, you control your cancer risk through lifestyle choices. Don’t smoke. Eat right. Work out. It could save your life.

This is Dr. Bruce Feinberg. Be well.
