April is the cruelest month.
April 1st I come home to find my son Daniel grinning ear to ear, blurting out, “I aced my math test!”
“That’s great,” I replied. Daniel’s not the best math student.
“Psych,” he said. “April Fool’s—72!”
That kind of foolishness may be innocent, but we mustn’t be the fool about our health.
April marks Cancer Awareness month, the time we designate to make sure we are not fooled by misperceptions about the disease.
We’ve made a lot of progress in our understanding of cancer, but there are still simple truths that many of us must learn.
The biggest myth to dispel is that you can’t control your risk of developing cancer.
You can control your cancer risk by not smoking, by eating right, exercising, and getting screened.
It’s up to you.
This is Dr. Bruce Feinberg. Be well.
