Ah, ah, ah-choo!
If you are like me there are few things you dread as much as allergy season.
Oh how I cringe when I see my beautiful black sedan turned yellow with pollen.
But have you ever wondered how allergies really work?
Allergies are the result of a hypersensitive immune system that overreacts to external substances that enter the body.
A properly functioning immune system is a disciplined biological defense mechanism. It identifies and destroys all kinds of foreign invaders and keeps us healthy.
But sometimes our immune system makes mistakes, and one result is allergies.
An allergic immune system misidentifies an otherwise innocuous substance, such as pollen, as harmful, and then attacks it with a ferocity far greater than is required. The results can range from sneezing, to vomiting, to diarrhea.
It’s enough to ruin my day.
This is Dr. Bruce Feinberg. Be well.
