Winning the War on Cancer

Sunday we celebrated National Cancer Survivors Day.

You know, when we began recognizing survivors with this holiday 20 years ago, it wasn’t nearly the event that it is now.

Why? There simply were not as many cancer survivors.

In only 20 years we have transformed cancer from a death sentence to a chronic illness that people are living with, like heart disease and diabetes.

As a result cancer mortality rates have fallen for 15 consecutive years, with no sign of slowing down.

By 2010, 13 million Americans will be alive and well despite having a history of cancer.

While promising, there is still so much we can do and so many more lives we can save.

It is imperative that we maintain these trends with continued emphasis on smoking cessation, following screening guidelines, and increased funding for new and advanced treatments.

Let’s make next year’s National Cancer Survivors Day even bigger.

This is Dr. Bruce Feinberg. Be well.
