Screening for Colon Cancer

April is National Cancer Awareness month.

And if there’s one cancer we should be aware of, it’s colon cancer.

Why?

Because 80% of colon cancer can be prevented or cured.

This year, 160,000 Americans will be diagnosed with this disease, and more than a third will eventually lose their life to it.

But greater than 80 percent of these cancer deaths would be prevented by following simple and easy screening guidelines.

  • Low risk persons without a family or personal history of colon cancer should be screened at age 50, then every ten years.
  • African Americans, who experience greater incidence and, often, earlier age of onset, should begin screening at age 45.
  • Those with a family or personal history should work with their doctors to establish an appropriate screening schedule.

The bottom line is that colon cancer is a preventable epidemic, but it’s up to each of us to get screened.

This is Dr. Bruce Feinberg. Be well.
