The Decline in Cancer Mortality Rates

The biggest health story in a long time was the announcement of the first decline in cancer mortality rates in 70 years.

But is this really news?

Actually, we’ve been seeing this trend for about a decade.

And while there is much work left to do, we’re winning the war on cancer on a number of fronts:

First, better prevention from lifestyle changes, most importantly smoking cessation and healthy diet
Second, improved screening tests for colon, cervix, breast, and prostate cancers
Third, advances in treatment with less toxic, more effective therapies that not only extend lives, but increase the number of cures

The result is: lower incidence, longer survival, and less mortality.
