Vitamin and Nutritional Supplements

In 2005, 50 million Americans will spend nearly 5 billion dollars on vitamin and nutritional supplements.

Why the fascination with these products and the often-misguided notion that more is better.

The concept of vitamins dates back hundreds of years when scientists were able to prove that common diseases were caused by nutritional deficiencies.

To prevent theses diseases, medical experts recommended a daily allowance of vitamins like you see on cereal boxes.

More recently, scientists are asking, “what is the optimal amount of a vitamin?”

Too many jumped on this and said, “if a little is good, than a lot is better,” leading to megavitamin use.

But in cancer care, more is not always better, as large doses of vitamin A and vitamin E have proven.

Maybe the real answer lies not in the amount, but in the mix of vitamins. I believe in a natural mix.

So follow the guidelines, eat your fruits and veggies, and save your money on the supplements.
