The world was deeply saddened to learn of Peter Jennings’s passing from lung cancer.
We’ve come to accept death as a part of life, but his struck a chord because we knew his face and name so well for so long.
His disease progressed quickly, it seemed, taking his life only a few months after we learned he was sick.
There is no denying that cancer is a serious, deadly disease, and that cases like Peter Jennings’s do exist. But more and more they are becoming the exception and not the rule.
Most people who hear the dreaded words “You have cancer” will live healthy, happy lives. By 2010, there will be 12 million cancer survivors in this country.
Cancer can be prevented, screened, and cured. All three happen every day.
So remember, for every tragedy like Peter Jennings, there are triumphs like Lance Armstrong, Nancy Reagan, and Robert De Niro: men and women who have survived cancer, lived full lives, and achieve great things.
