Memorial Day

Memorial Day honors the thousands of men and women who have served our great nation in its time of need.

For me, this week is about my father, Corporal Coleman Irving Feinberg, who was stationed in The Philippines during World War II.

Dad was a code breaker who interpreted the enemies’ communication patterns so our guys could understand the enemy’s plan of attack.

Today, I have a similar mission in a very different war.

By studying the genetic code, oncologists like me work to better understand what we are up against in the war on cancer.

Like any war, it too has its casualties.

The good news is that we are winning on a number of fronts: better prevention, improved screening, and advances in treatments.

And we are learning more about our genetic codes and how it affects our risk of developing the disease.

We honor our veterans on Memorial Day because they fight the good fight for the rest of us. Let’s also honor those who have fought cancer, and let’s fight it ourselves.
