History of Cancer

In the past 100 years, cancer care has dramatically evolved from once performing radical, mutilating surgery that removed entire body parts, to today altering the behavior and genetic make up of microscopic cells.

The first systemic therapies dated back 100 years ago, when Dr. Coley first attempted to harness the immune system to fight disease.

The 1950’s brought chemotherapy and radiation, which forever changed the landscape of cancer care, but are often too toxic.

The future of cancer care lies in targeted therapies. Often taken in pill form, these treatments kill bad cells while sparing healthy ones, much as antibiotics kill bacteria. As scientists continue to unwrap the body’s genetic makeup, we are moving closer and closer to personalizing cancer treatment.
