Cancer Myths

Recently, an American Cancer Society survey found that many Americans are greatly misinformed about cancer.

  • More than 1/4 of those surveyed said that a cure for cancer is available but hidden by the medical industry.
  • Almost half said that cancer can spread during surgery.
  • Another third thought pain medications can’t treat cancer pain.

All of these statements are categorically false, but perception can greatly influence reality.

In this case, misperceptions may affect health behavior, and, as a result, prevent screening, stop people from undergoing treatment, and that may lead to illness and death.

We need to do more to educate ourselves about health issues, especially cancer. Fortunately, there is no shortage of useful information available.

Take matters into your own hands and learn what makes your body work.
