When Roseanne Roseannadanna’s real life persona Gilda Radner confronted ovararian cancer, she might have said: “What’s all this talk about Alternative Medicine?”
Unconventional, alternative, and complimentary therapies are healing practices and beliefs outside of mainstream medicine.
These approaches are attractive, as patients sometimes feel lost in the technologically and impersonal nature of modern medicine provided by caregivers, who are often perceived insensitive and hurried.
Confusing jargon and incomprehensible statistics worsen a patient’s sense of alienation and helplessness.
So, it is natural that patients and families sometimes seek therapies that appear to be more natural, less toxic, and easier to understand, provided by practitioners who are perceived as more caring, and more holistic.
It sounds to good to be true, and maybe it is.
Listen next week as I explain the good and bad of alternative medicine.
