Cancers of the small intestine account for less than 2% of all malignant tumors of the gastrointestinal tract. Most occur in the first or second part of the duodenum. Adenocarcinomas are the most frequent histologic type but they comprise less that 50% of all primary malignant tumors of the small intestine. Considered together, sarcomas, lymphomas, and malignant carcinoid tumors are more common than adenocarcinomas. Since they are uncommon, information on their method of spread and biologic behavior is incomplete. However, there is no reason to believe that any of these small bowel tumors behave much differently than similar lesions arising in other parts of the gastrointestinal tract.
