GCS Physician Dr. Jay Traveled to Honduras to Help at Cancer Center

Tuesday, April 19th, 2011

Jayanthi Srinivasiah (Dr. Jay), MDDr. Jayanthi Srinivasiah (Dr. Jay), along with her 16-year-old daughter, recently traveled to Tegucigalpa, Honduras, through the Honduras Outreach Program. Dr. Jay worked with the center’s director, Dr. Flora Duarte, as well as local oncologists, nurses, and patients to both observe and contribute to the medical care cancer patients are receiving in Tegucigalpa. During her weeklong visit, she also offered expert consultation for a tumor board and gave talks in genomics and cancer.

Dr. Jay spent four days seeing patients at Tegucigalpa’s cancer center, Emma Romero de Callejas, giving feedback on the treatment options she was seeing among cancer patients there.

“I felt that my visit was extremely beneficial to both the doctors in Tegucigalpa and to myself, as I felt fulfilled to help with the patients’ needs,” Dr. Jay said. “I plan to do this next year again in March 2012 and take a few nurses with me if possible, as well as any other personnel who may be interested in helping the cancer center achieve its goals.”

The clinic also needs increased financial support, Dr. Jay noted, and she hopes some fundraising efforts can be established on the clinic’s behalf.

Dr. Jay offers comprehensive cancer care at the GCS-Stemmer (2712 Lawrenceville Highway, Decatur; 770-496-5555) and GCS-Johns Creek (6335 Hospital Parkway; 770-623-8965) locations.
